Silent Depths

This page I intend to be freediving stuff. Maybe if I start posting here it will encourage me to start training again and eventually venture into the freezing waters of Chepstow and finish my AIDA** course before Sam forgets about me entirely!

Well I finally e-mailed Sam about completing my AIDA** course, looks like I will be doing it at Chepstow on the 10th-11th June. Just need to figure out a way to keep warm in the water now! Anyone mad enough to want to come and join me?

I am officially an AIDA** Freediver! I completed my course with Saltfree at Chepstow on the 10-11th June, fortunately we had glorious sunshine so sunburn was more of a problem than cold. Thanks to Libby for the instruction and Dave for getting me out of the water several times (that platform is a long way up!) and doing all sorts of helpful things on the platform. I also got to meet Mandy Mermaid who lent me her monofin which I loved :-)

I had a fantastic time, thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was amazingly finning gently down the line and watching the plate at the bottom finally emerge from the gloom. I really enjoyed the whole sensation of being underwater like that. Unfortunately, the limiting factor turned out not to be running out of air but the fact that my sinuses take an age to clear. It’s not a problem in scuba where I have all the time in the world for my descent but it’s a bit more tricky in freediving. I got to the plate at 16m to pass the course and I wasn’t far off the 20m plate (I saw it and considering the vis down there I must have been at 18m for that!), sadly I also gave myself a minor nosebleed in the process.

So, I have discovered that I really do love freediving but I’m never going to compete for depth. I think my aim now is to do a little more training and get to the point where I can get comfortably to the 15-20m range and potter about there and look at the view for a while - now I just need to find time for the training…
